Honours Thesis

This thesis explores the role of active design in landscape architecture and its potential to encourage daily physical activity while creating healthier, more sustainable communities. With physical inactivity contributing to rising rates of chronic disease, thoughtful landscape design presents an opportunity to promote healthier lifestyles and improve overall well-being.

Through an evidence-based approach, active design focuses on creating accessible, engaging environments that naturally encourage movement and social interaction. Drawing on case studies, published research, and discussions with landscape architecture professionals, this thesis examines the key design principles and strategies that contribute to successful, active, and connected urban communities.

Capstone Project

Pier 8: A Waterfront Revitalization project explores the transformation of Pier 8 into a vibrant urban destination that celebrates the city’s industrial past while embracing its future. Rooted in Hamilton’s rich history of industry and trade, the design aims to preserve the authentic character of the harbour while introducing contemporary landscape elements that encourage recreation, connectivity, and community engagement.

The proposed design creates a dynamic waterfront where work, play, and nature coexist. Through thoughtfully integrated green spaces, public gardens, recreational amenities, and active transportation connections, the project encourages both active and passive recreation while enhancing accessibility to the waterfront. The vision is to establish a welcoming, year-round destination that reconnects residents with the harbour, celebrates Hamilton’s unique identity, and transforms Pier 8 into a vibrant public space for future generations.
